Established in November 2017, Form Follows Function, also known as 3FTraining, is a functional fitness and training lifestyle that focuses on the body, while building mental toughness that ignites the relentless spirit that is within us all. The 3F Mantra, Reform, Perform, Transform, is a three step process that will lead you to achieving your fitness goals. First by reforming the way you think and approach health and fitness. It all starts with your mind and your brain is the catalyst for you taking the next step, performing. Performing is now putting that new mentality into practice. You will begin executing movements through repetitive practice which is key to body adaptation. Putting together custom programs specific for each individual and adding variations prevents the body from plateauing and allows us to move to the next phase transforming. Your mind and body will be in a completely different space than they were weeks prior. You will mentally be ready and willing to take on any challenge. You will seek out new obstacles to conquer. Your body will also go through changes aesthetically and functionally. You will move and function better day to day creating a better overall quality of life. Reform. Perform. Transform.
re·form
/rəˈfôrm/
Reforming is about change and change begins in the mind. Everything we do in life begins in our mind so it is only appropriate we start here. Often times, when on the fitness journey people believe that doing the actual exercise is most challenging. Truth is exercising is challenging on all levels from beginner to the most the most advanced person who exercises. Exercises never get easier; you simply get better. But it all starts upstairs, in your head. Once your mind is reformed (changed) you are now ready and equipped to take action.
per·form
/pərˈfôrm/
Performing is about action. Taking action by doing the work that puts you on your path to meet and accomplish your goals. You are now actively and consciously engaging in habits in an effort to get better. Through activity and repetition you increase your level of comfort making you more confident programming your body to do the work. Now with consistent work and increased confidence you are now in positions you to get to step 3 of our mantra. Transformation.
trans·form
/tran(t)sˈfôrm/
Transforming is to make a change in appearance or character. In this case both are applicable as you've first gone through a change of mindset. You've changed your views and approach to exercise and fitness. You have put in the work necessary with better diet and nutrition to go along with the work that YOU have been doing. Now true change has occurred not only in the form of pounds and inches, but in overall thought, feeling and approach to this health and fitness lifestyle. True transformation starts within.
As a former college athlete, I had given up on working out, and I was happy that I didn’t have to get up at 4 in the morning for a 5 o’clock workout. I didn’t need to run 2 miles, go to individual workouts, and go to team lifts anymore. My intention post-career was to “enjoy life” as no longer anything to train for, so why to work out.
That all changed one summer 2010 as I was humbled and embarrassed by my appearance in a family photo. I didn’t look like an athlete. My body had no form, no definition, just this skinny guy with a little gut. Just as it has been for many others, my goal to be physically fit was based on optics. I wanted to train my body to get my muscles to pop. I had a desire to look good aesthetically but had issues staying and keeping an exercise regimen. Cardio was not my thing, and lifting was boring. There had also been a decline in the health of some of my family members. In 2013 I was introduced to functional fitness and had been hooked ever since. My goals became more about performance and overall wellness than appearance. That mindset change allowed me to be more goal-oriented in my training, giving me a “why,” a new reason to train. To be better at balancing, more endurance, and better overall physically. Functional Fitness prepares you for everyday life.
